John Cherry is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Foreign Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Waterloo, Adjunct Professor at the University of Guelph, Director of the Consortium for Field Interdisciplinary Research in Groundwater (CONFRING), Deputy Director of the G360 Institute for Groundwater Research, Honorary Professor at the University of Hong Kong, and Honorary Professor at China University of Geosciences (Beijing). He is a pioneer in contaminant hydrogeology and inventor of multilevel groundwater monitoring technology. He has received the O.E. Meinzer Award (1985), Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize (2016), Stockholm Water Prize (2020), and the Chinese Government Friendship Award (2025). His textbook 'Groundwater' co-authored with Allan Freeze (1979) is one of the most influential in the field. In 2017, he initiated The Groundwater Project to provide free access to groundwater science knowledge globally.
